For the first time since the beginning of the Ford and Carroll Shelby partnership, production of the Shelby cars was under the control of the Ford Motor Company, since Shelby had lost the lease for their factory at L.A. International Airport. The GT-500 proved its mettle with a 428 cid. "police interceptor" engine. Changes for the model year included replacing the high-beams in the grille opening with wider spaced rectangular fog lights.
